CHARACTERISTICS OF A GOOD WORK ETHICS

Work ethics is a value based on hard work and diligence. Ethics is the basic concepts and fundamental principles of decent human conduct. It includes study of universal values such as the essential quality of all men and women, human rights, obedience to the law of land, concern for health and safety.

The followings are the characteristics of a Good Work Ethic:

PROFESSIONALISM: Being professional involves everything from how you dress and present yourself in an organization settings to the way you treat others. Professionalism is such a broad category that encompasses all other elements of a strong work ethic.

RESPECTFULNESS: As an employee, you must remain poised and diplomatic. Whether you’re serving a customer, meeting with patient/client or collaborating with colleagues, you must do your best to respect everyone’s especially under trying circumstances . This shows you value people’s individual worth as well as their professional contributions.

DEDICATION:  You don’t stop until the job is done and done right. “Good enough” is not good enough for you and your team until the job is done. You must put in extra hours to get things right, giving attention to the activities of the day and devotion to excellence.

DETERMINATION: Don’t let obstacles stop you, try to embrace challenges. As an employee, you must be able to solve your client problems by seeking better and more innovative answers.

ACCOUNTABILITY: You must take personal responsibility for your actions and outcomes in every situation, and avoid making excuses when things don’t go as you planned. You must admit your mistakes and use them as learning experiences.

HOW TO DEVELOP GOOD WORK ETHICS

A good work ethic can be critical to success, but any good work ethic involves good time management, focus and dedication. If you are looking to develop or improve your work ethic, you can make progress by concentrating on these areas.

(1) Make work a priority: To develop a good work ethic, you will have to take work seriously and aim to do it well. During work time,  work related tasks  should be your primary concern and make sure you balance your work life and non-work life so that you have enough  time and energy to do your work very well.

2) Be professional: Being respectful of others, showing consistency and reliability, being honest and other values are part of developing good work ethic.

(3) Maintain a good work reputation at work: You can cultivate a good reputation at work by being honest, following workplace rules (concerning punctuality, breaks, time off, e.t.c) and being fair to others. Avoid gossiping at work. This will show that you are focused on your job.

4. Practice self discipline: Staying focused, and making choices that will benefit you in the long run are also part of developing good work ethic. This means being able to tell yourself and others, when work needs to come first.

(5) Set aside time specifically for work: Give yourself a set period of time (such as an hour and a half) in which you work deliberately and without distractions. Ask others not to disturb you, turn off all electronic distractions. e.t.c

(6) Know your distractions and minimize them when working: Everyone has certain things that can distract them from work;  social media, chatting or texting friends, playing games, watching television, e.t.c. When you are working, make sure to minimise potential distractions and those that you know you are especially drawn to. If people distract you by chatting, tell them you have work that you’ve got to finish, but you’d catch up with them later.

(7)  Resisting procrastination: If you know that something needs to be done, don’t give up until it is. During so can give you a foundation for long-term success and strong work ethic.

(8) Focus on doing your work very well: No one is perfect, so we all make mistake in our work from time to time. However, if you make it your goal to do your work well (No matter what it is), it will increase your motivation to succeed, and to fight procrastination.

CONCLUSION

Ethics are derived from human values such as respect, responsibility, integrity and the personal behavioural standards a person holds.
Violation of these ethics may have negative effect in an organization and it can leads to personal differences, resignation of valued .employees, suspension or termination from the job.
In conclusion, learn how to maintain a good work ethic, the harder you work, the more luckier and more prosperous you become.
